About the Item

This refined 19th-century Japanese shikiita stand is crafted from richly figured burled wood and displays a warm, naturally developed patina acquired over decades of use and age. The surface reveals an exceptionally expressive burl grain, making each area of the wood visually distinctive. In Japan, burl wood trays and stands have been used for centuries to elevate and display cherished objects such as vases, incense burners, and small sculptures. They were also commonly employed in tea rooms, where shikiita served as an elegant base for the presentation of valued utensils during the tea ceremony. Owing to its generous proportions, this piece may also be used as a tea tray. Both functional and sculptural, this stand offers a quiet yet powerful presence, suitable for traditional interiors as well as contemporary spaces seeking an authentic Japanese accent.
