About the Item

This is a huge old Japanese lacquer wood bowl. It was manufactured in 1906 (Meiji period), and its age can be read from the writing on the bottom. The material used is cedar wood, making this a rare large lacquer bowl that is rarely seen today. Based on its size, we can surmise that it was a tool owned by a lacquer wholesaler or craftsman to handle large quantities of lacquer, rather than by an ordinary household. It is made by hollowing out a thick piece of wood, and the deep flavor from years of use is carved all over. The inside has a beautiful gradation of black and reddish brown created by years of use of the lacquer, like an abstract painting by nature. This is an accidental beauty created by the passage of time, a look that cannot be reproduced artificially. As you can see in the image, there are some cracks on some parts of the piece, but the structure is structurally sound and there are no problems with its use. The scratches and cracks caused by aging enhance the depth and narrative of the piece. The piece has an impressive presence even when displayed as an objet d'art, but it can also be used as a table by turning it upside down. It is a gem that blends naturally into contemporary minimalist interiors and Japanese modern spaces. You will appreciate the beauty and history of this one-of-a-kind piece, which cannot be found in mass-produced items. It is a one-of-a-kind existence that is imbued with the spirit of wabi-sabi.
