About the Item

This is an old Japanese pottery shrine (zushi). It was made during the Meiji and Taisho periods (1860s-1920s), and was mainly placed in gardens to enshrine deities. The word “zushi” means a small building or box used to enshrine gods and Buddha, and has played the role of protecting objects of faith since ancient times in Japan. This work is another valuable remnant that gives form to the religious beliefs of the people of that time. What is noteworthy is its size. It is very rare to see such a large pottery shrine, and it has a strong presence. The roof and sides are decorated with delicate designs, especially the openwork of the “moon” on the left side and the “sun” on the right side. These fine expressions show a reverence for nature and celestial bodies. The chipping and weathering that has occurred over the years in some places gives the piece a unique decadent beauty. In the modern age, it is not merely a shrine, but a piece of art that brings spiritual depth to a space. Embodying the spirit of “wabi-sabi,” the shrine evokes a sense of serenity and sublimity and adds a gentle tension to the space.
