This bowl is made from Tokoname ware, a type of pottery from Aichi Prefecture. Tokoname ware has a history dating back to the 12th century, and there are still several active kilns today (marked with a red circle on the attached map).
This particular bowl was originally made as the lid for a large urn.
In Japan, there has been a tradition of placing Buddhist scriptures in containers made of copper pipes or pottery and burying them for future preservation. This bowl was made as a lid for such a container.
