About the Item

Antique Samurai drinking vessel with red lacquer and wooden stopper in excellent condition. The hand made cord tassels complete the set. Dark old patina due to its age enhances its historical beauty. The sake gourd was a common attribute of the Samurai, it was traditionally attached to the waist by a cord. In Japan, gourd or "hyotan" is a symbol of good luck or success. Symbolic belief of gourd in Japan has existed for a long time. Based on the Japanese history, Hideyoshi Toyotomi (1537–1598), one of the greatest historical samurai heroes, the battle flag of Hideoshi featured a gourd design. Every time he triumphed in a battle, he would adorn his flag with new gourd motifs. After that, this flag, also known as the "Sennaribyoutan," or "1000 gourds growing on a tree," became a well-known victory symbol. This gourd is attached to the base. The long neck bottle of classic form was heavily potted with coarse clay with high iron content. The flask, circa 18th century Edo period, was purposed for sake storage but also substituted as a flower vase during tea ceremony. The surface is covered in glossy black glaze and contrasts strikingly with white ash glaze around the shoulder. The white, fired with straw, displays a splashing feather effect and fine crackles, blending in with the black artistically. This type of Karatsu ware...
