About the Item
This is an old Japanese stone “yagen” (medicine grinder), believed to have been used during the Meiji period (1860s–1900s).
Though simple in form, it carries with it the silent presence of a time long past—an artifact that reflects everyday life and cultural values of its era.
Crafted from solid stone, the piece has a rugged yet warm texture. Its minimalist shape, carved by hand for practical use, radiates a sculptural, almost abstract beauty. The interior surface bears the subtle traces of use—testament to its former function in grinding herbs or medicinal ingredients.
While it no longer serves its original purpose, today it stands as a powerful art object, capable of transforming any space with its presence. The harmony between natural material and human effort, shaped by the passage of time, gives it a one-of-a-kind expression—one that embodies the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi: beauty found in imperfection and impermanence.
