Japanese Antique Wabi-Sabi Black Ladder 1800s-1860s / Primitive Object

About the Item

This is a very old black ladder made in Japan. The simple construction and condition suggest that it was used in the late Edo period (1800s-1860s). It is made of cedar wood with straw strings tied in places. Its appearance shows traces of practical use in farming villages and old private homes. It was probably used as an indoor ladder to climb up to the second floor or attic in old Japanese houses. Because it was placed near the hearth for many years, the entire piece has become sooty and blackened, giving it a unique, deep look. This sooty texture was created naturally over time. It is an accidental beauty that cannot be reproduced by modern intentional processing. The loose joints have been carefully reinforced with straw twine. The ladder has not been discarded, but has been used and cared for over and over again. It is as if the life and spirit of the people behind this ladder are all beautifully condensed in this piece. Although the ladders have already fulfilled their practical role, they now exist as wonderful art pieces and historical documents. It is almost a miracle that such a wooden ladder has remained unburned. Although the ladder has been lightly cleaned of dust, there is still soot on the surface. Please be aware that there is a possibility that you may get black soot on your hands or clothes when you move it. Please note that this product cannot be used for practical purposes. This piece can be hung on the wall or displayed as an objet d'art, giving it a quiet presence in your space. A beautiful old tool that embodies the spirit of Wabi-Sabi.
