About the Item

This is a workbench board made during the Meiji era to the early Showa period. It was used in a traditional house in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture. Originally employed for tasks such as making soba noodles and cutting rice cakes, the board features traces of flour and numerous knife marks that beautifully overlap, creating an artwork shaped by time. While this area is now known as one of Japan’s leading rice-producing regions, it is believed that soba was also widely consumed. During celebrations or when guests visited, soba and rice cakes were often served, and boards like this one were used for such occasions. The presence of many knife marks suggests that it was frequently used. On the reverse side, there are even more deeply etched knife marks than on the front, and the passage of time reflected on both sides serves as evidence of its historical weight, embodying the daily lives of people and the culture of the region. As the years went by and this board fell out of use, it likely spent a long time stored in an attic, resulting in a darkened surface from the smoke of the irori (sunken hearth). There is no significant warping or twisting, and it remains in good condition. Due to its weight, it is recommended to use brackets or fixtures for installation. A board with such character is now quite rare and hard to come by. It is a highly valuable item that I highly recommend.
