About the Item

This is an old Japanese wooden workbench made from zelkova wood (keyaki), known for its hardness and beautiful grain. The thick cross-sectional shape clearly reveals the concentric growth rings from above, displaying a stunning natural pattern. The deep dark brown color of the wood expresses a rich patina developed through years of use and aging, harmonizing a moderate sheen with the elegant texture unique to antiques. The estimated production period spans from the Meiji era (1868) to around the Showa era (1950), making it a piece with considerable historical value. It is believed to have been used as a tool related to agricultural work or traditional handcrafts. The underside bears countless fine marks as if struck repeatedly by a small blade, reflecting the accumulation of diverse work and a long history. Although not a perfect circle, the cross-sectional form combines the strength and delicacy of natural wood. While the surface is not completely flat, it functions well as a display stand, and can be easily leveled by applying felt or similar material if desired. This workbench transcends its utilitarian origins to embody the aesthetics of wabi-sabi nurtured over time. It is a highly recommended piece that can be used diversely as a flower stand, a base for small objects, or a display stand, adding a touch of rustic elegance to both traditional Japanese-style rooms and modern interiors. Weighing approximately 14 kg, it has a substantial presence. Weight: 14 kg Item number: BO087
