Japanese 19th century Edo-Meiji Period Satsuma stoneware incense burner (Koro) with small wooden support table By: unknown Material: ceramic, stoneware, wood, enamel, paint Technique: carved, hand-carved, hand-painted, painted, varnished, enameled, pressed, molded Dimensions: 7 in x 11.5 in Date: 19th century Style: Edo, Meiji Place of origin: Japan An elegant circular ceramic incense burner (or Koro) with a bulbous body that tapers towards a modest base and a removable domed lid. The cream-colored body is decorated with gilded accents and painted scenes of figures set against natural backdrops. It is perforated to allow smoke to flow. The underside bears identifying seals. Accompanying is a dark, lacquered wood table with abstract geometric patterns and plant motifs carved into its four curved, volute-shaped legs and circular base. The table has been artfully constructed and varnished to showcase the flowing designs. Japanese Satsuma ceramics hold historical and cultural importance, symbolizing the artistic achievements of the Edo period. These pieces exemplify craftsmanship and intricate design, serving as enduring reflections of Japan's rich artistic heritage.

A fine and elegant Japanese Satsuma tripod incense burner, koro, with pierced metal lid, signed Eizan (?) Meiji Period, late 19th century, Japan. The koro, or censer, features a stoneware body of slightly compressed globular form, supported on three short and squat legs. The wide mouth with a recessed metal rim, and topped by an openwork metal lid topped with overlapping chrysanthemum blossoms of silver repousse. The body of the koro finely painted with fan shaped cartouches. The fans in the foreground with sprays of blossoming chrysanthemum.
