About the Item

Original Burmese Kalaga-style tapestry, dating from the mid-20th century Tapestry, panel, or wall hanging depicting two elephants in relief. The tapestry is richly embroidered with gold thread, velvet, wool, stones, sequins, and beads on a cotton background. The kalaga is mounted on a wooden panel. Kalagas are never placed under glass to preserve and enhance the relief of the motif. This kalaga consists of a central motif, within a circle of two elephants, surrounded by layers of borders. To color them, pieces of fabric, velvet, and satin of different colors are cut to match the shapes of the motifs, then sewn onto the outlines, which are highlighted with gold thread. Cotton is then carefully inserted between the layers of fabric according to the patterns, creating a quilted, three-dimensional effect, the relief. This kalaga is highly decorative and the pattern is very beautiful. Made in Burma (Myanmar) - Mid 20th century Burma is home to one of Southeast Asia's finest artisanal heritages, dating back over a thousand years: the kalaga. Kalaga is the traditional name for tapestries embroidered and decorated entirely by hand with gold thread and precious beads. Kalaga flourished under the Konbaung dynasty in the 19th century and reached their peak during the reign of Mindon Min. Their creation requires great skill, aesthetic sense, and patience to create a variety of delicate and detailed images and patterns. The motifs depicted on kalagas often have religious significance and are inspired by ancient tales of Jakarta (Buddha's journey to enlightenment) and the Ramayana (the Hindu epic of Prince Rama's journey).
