About the Item
This artwork, acquired in Hong Kong during the 1990s, is presumed to have been produced in the same kiln from the Han dynasty, based on the head of the Sotheby's reference piece, which also originated from Hong Kong. Furthermore, given its almost identical shape to the piece from the Artemis Gallery, which is part of the Santa Barbara, California, USA collection, ex-Charles Craig collection, it is likely to share a similar origin. Soil on surface has not been cleaned since initial acquisition.

The Han Dynasty spanned from 206 BC to 220 AD, a period renowned for its advancements in pottery. The terracotta works from this era are a vital part of ancient Chinese art, often found in the form of burial objects such as warrior figurines, animal statues, and deities. These pieces were typically made from a clay that fired to a gray or reddish-brown finish, with some items receiving glazed decoration.
