About the Item

This finely cast bronze incense burner is an accomplished work of the late Edo period, attributed to Kanaya Gorōsaburō, a distinguished master of the Kanaya lineage of Kyoto bronze founders. The Kanaya workshop was highly regarded for its refined metalwork produced for Buddhist ritual use and the tea tradition. The vessel is formed in a compressed globular shape and raised on three elegantly tapered feet, creating a balanced and sculptural profile. Encircling the body are high-relief cranes (tsuru) in flight, finely modeled with elongated necks, extended legs, and crisply articulated plumage. In Japanese symbolism, the crane represents longevity, fidelity, and auspicious continuity, making it a favored motif in refined domestic, tea, and temple contexts of the Edo period. Each side is fitted with boldly modeled shishi mask lug handles grasping heavy bronze rings. The expressive faces, deeply chased manes, and robust rings provide a powerful visual counterpoint to the grace of the crane imagery. The rim is finished with a precisely cast key-fret (raimon) border, while the shoulder is further enriched with classical scrolling and cloud motifs—hallmarks of the Kanaya workshop’s layered decorative vocabulary and technical mastery. The underside is carefully finished with a cast circular medallion depicting a dragon (ryū), framed by concentric rings. This attention to an otherwise unseen surface is characteristic of high-quality Kyoto bronze work and reinforces the symbolic unity of the piece, combining crane and dragon as emblems of harmony, balance, and cosmic order. The bronze surface exhibits a deep, warm patina, with natural wear and incense accretions within the interior consistent with age and ritual use. The incense burner is accompanied by its original wooden storage box (tomobako), bearing ink inscriptions that confirm the attribution and significantly enhance the work’s historical and collector value.
