About the Item

This wooden coconut grater (khood maprow) from the early 20th century is carved in the form of a crouching beast ready to pounce. Once used by a food vendor in a southeast Asian market, the sculptural tool would have been placed before a shallow bowl and used to scrape the meat from coconuts into fine, snow-like flakes for use in dumplings, sauces and sweetmeats.
