About the Item

A pair of antique Japanese samurai Abumi (horse riding stirrups) from the Edo period (1615-1868) Abumi often have a distinctive shape, curving up and backward at the front to achieve a correct balance for the rider. The open sides are a safety feature, designed to prevent the rider's foot from getting caught in the stirrup if thrown from the horse. They were typically made of lacquered wood or iron and often featured intricate decorations using techniques such as silver or other metal inlays and lacquer work. This specific pair is made of iron. They are quite heavy, and they are inlaid with silver in a pattern of wheat. The interiors are finished in red lacquer. The use of abumi dates back to the 5th century in Japan. They were a vital part of warfare, especially for cavalry and mounted archery, until Western-style stirrups were introduced in the late 19th century during the Meiji period
