About the Item

A rare pair of Japanese hibachi (charcoal braziers) dating to the Edo period (17th century). The bodies are crafted from paulownia wood (kiri) and richly decorated with maki-e lacquer depicting autumn maple leaves (momiji), enhanced with delicate raden (mother-of-pearl) inlay. Hibachi of this type were traditionally used for heating and as refined interior furnishings in Japanese residences. The combination of lightweight kiri wood with elaborate lacquer and inlay reflects a sophisticated balance between functionality and decorative elegance characteristic of Edo-period domestic objects. Both pieces show visible wear, surface abrasions, losses, and patina consistent with age and long-term use. These signs of wear contribute to the historical character of the set and attest to its authenticity. This matching pair represents an evocative example of Edo-period lacquer craftsmanship and seasonal Japanese aesthetics. ⸻ Details • Origin: Japan • Period: Edo period, 17th century • Type: Hibachi (charcoal braziers), pair • Material: Paulownia wood (kiri) • Decoration: Maki-e lacquer with momiji (maple leaves) motif and raden (mother-of-pearl) inlay • Dimensions (each): approx. 27.5 × 27.5 cm, height 19.7 cm
