About the Item

Cast in bronze, this sculpture depicts a mythical beast with a sinuously curved body and an animated, rising posture. The overall form evokes a dragon or guardian creature, embodying both vitality and balance within its dynamic stance. The head is angular in shape, with long spiral horns curving upward on each side. The eyes and mouth are rendered with simple yet powerful lines, creating a tense, expressive countenance. The slender neck arches gracefully backward, merging naturally into the body’s flowing contour. The entire surface is densely decorated with fine incised patterns—cloud scrolls, spirals, and concentric motifs—faithfully reflecting the traditional ornamentation of ancient Chinese bronzes. The depth and rhythm of the engraving vary subtly, leaving a tactile, hand-carved texture across the surface. The four legs are short yet muscular, firmly supporting the arched body, while the claws are finely detailed with raised dots and engraved markings. The tail curls upward in a smooth, elegant curve, enhancing the sculpture’s overall sense of upward motion. The surface displays a natural patina of green and ochre tones formed through long-term oxidation, with traces of original metallic sheen remaining in places. The patina is stable and visually harmonious, the green encrustation accentuating the recessed patterns and enhancing the depth of relief. Overall, this work exemplifies the refined artistry of ancient bronze casting, combining graceful form, intricate ornamentation, and a commanding presence that conveys both strength and sacred symbolism.
