About the Item
A magnificent and highly rare pair of large Japanese hibachi (charcoal braziers), crafted from kiri wood (paulownia) and lavishly decorated with gold makie lacquer depicting scenes of imperial court horse races — a motif rarely found in domestic furnishings.
Dating to the late Edo to early Meiji period, these hibachi exemplify aristocratic refinement and ceremonial elegance. The intricate makie work, rich in detail and shimmer, suggests that the pair was commissioned for a member of the imperial court or high-ranking elite. Every element — from the natural warmth of the paulownia grain to the copper-lined interiors — speaks to high social status and masterful craftsmanship.
• Period: Late Edo – Meiji era, 19th century
• Materials: Kiri (paulownia) wood with gold makie lacquer, copper insert
• Decoration: Imperial horse race scenes in makie
• Dimensions: Diameter: 32 cm (12.6 in); Height: 20.5 cm (8.1 in)
• Weight (pair): 5.8 kg (12.8 lb)
• Condition: Very good, with natural patina and minimal wear consistent with age. Minor lacquer losses; please refer to photos.
A museum-worthy pair and a true collector’s treasure — seldom does such a richly decorated set survive intact.
