About the Item

An exceptional Southeast Asian bronze drum, dating to the 15th century or earlier, and classified as a **Heger Type I**— one of the earlier form in SE Asian bronze drums.. only the 2000 year old Yunnan Drums and the 2000+ year old Dong Son drums out of the early culture in Vietnam that have rounded edges came before hand. These drums trace their origins to the **Dong Son culture** and represent a key transition between ancient ceremonial instruments and the later “frog drums” of mainland Southeast Asia. This example exhibits superb craftsmanship, with beautifully cast geometric and starburst motifs typical of the period. The surface bears a **deep, rich patina** developed over centuries, enhancing its visual and historical appeal. In excellent condition for its age, this impressive drum (19" diameter x 10.25" high; approx. 30 lbs) comes from an old European collection and exemplifies early Southeast Asian bronze artistry at its finest. Extremely rare as compared to the 18/19 century Shan drums which mostly come out of Burma, Thailand, and Laos.
