This position of the hand is the Gesture of argumentation, of the explanation of the Law
vitarka-mudrā, of the doctrine. In the vitarka mudrā, the tips of the thumb and index finger touch and form a circle: This mudrā symbolizes the teaching phase in the life of Buddha and the circle represents an endless flow of energy.
