About the Item

Figures from this era tend to be simpler and more utilitarian, reflecting the instability and regional diversity of the time. These pottery figures often unglazed or painted with basic pigments, depict soldiers, attendants, animals, and daily life objects meant to serve the deceased in the afterlife. Period: Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period(10th century) Medium: Sandstone, Celadon Type: Figure Statuette, Mingqi Provenance : Acquired in early 1990s from Hongkong Reference : Cernuschi Museum, Museum of Asian Arts of the City of Paris - Museum number : MC 9896 (Type : Closely related) * Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period Mingqi A time of political fragmentation between the Tang and Song dynasties, produced mingqi pottery figures that are distinct from those of other periods. Unlike the more refined and often glazed mingqi of the Tang Dynasty, figures from this era tend to be simpler and more utilitarian, reflecting the instability and regional diversity of the time. These pottery figures, often unglazed or painted with basic pigments, depict soldiers, attendants, animals, and daily life objects meant to serve the deceased in the afterlife. The craftsmanship is generally less elaborate compared to earlier periods, focusing on practicality rather than luxury. This era's mingqi highlight a transition in funerary practices and offer unique insight into a period marked by cultural adaptation and artistic evolution.
