About the Item

An uncommon Edo-period samurai jingasa, distinguished by its gilded crest decorations and richly lacquered red interior. Jingasa of this type were worn by samurai, ashigaru, and retainers, serving both as protective headgear and as a visible marker of status and affiliation. The exterior surface is adorned with applied gilded crests (mon), creating a restrained yet authoritative decorative effect. The interior is finished in red lacquer, a traditional choice valued for both its durability and auspicious connotations. The original padded head cushion remains intact, showing minor insect activity consistent with great age. The hat retains a strong sculptural presence and displays a well-preserved surface overall. Expected surface abrasions, small losses, and signs of wear are present, entirely consistent with Edo-period use and age, and contribute to the authenticity of the piece. Period: Edo period, circa 17th–18th century Materials: Lacquered surface with gilded crest decoration Dimensions: Diameter: 41 cm (16.1 in) Height: 10 cm (3.9 in) Weight: 650 g (1.4 lb) Condition: Good original condition with expected age-related wear, minor losses, and light insect damage to the interior head cushion area.
