About the Item

With bright color and intricate carvings, this petite Chinese snuff bottle from the early 20th century is a lovely example of the art of Peking glass. The little bottle is sculpted in a popular color known as "imperial yellow," "canary yellow" or "chicken-fat yellow," with contrasting decorations in a translucent green. In a process similar to cameo glass, the snuff bottle was shaped by repeatedly dipping a blown-glass form into liquid glass to create layers of yellow and green color. The outer layers were then carved away in a process called "green cut to yellow," revealing a bas-relief pond scene of leaping frogs amidst lotus leaves. The bottle is stoppered with copper lid and snuff spoon, topped by a bright blue turquoise bead.
