About the Item
A beautiful and rare 18th century Chinese export porcelain bowl, finely hand-painted in famille rose enamels with an unusual European subject scene around the exterior. The decoration depicts classical figures in a landscape setting, rendered in soft pastel enamels with remarkable attention to detail — a distinctive example of cross-cultural artistry from the Qing Dynasty Qianlong period (circa 1770s).
Inside the bowl, the center is adorned with a charming pair of goldfish swimming among aquatic plants, symbolizing prosperity and harmony in Chinese culture. The rim features a delicate iron-red spearhead border encircling the interior edge, complementing the refined palette of the bowl.
This piece represents the height of Chinese export porcelain production, crafted for the European market during the 18th century, when mythological and neoclassical motifs became highly fashionable among Western patrons.
Origin: China, Qing Dynasty, Qianlong Period (circa 1770s)
Medium: Hand-painted porcelain, famille rose palette
Dimensions: Diameter – 10¼ inches (26 cm); Height – 4½ inches (11.5 cm)
Condition:
Overall very good condition for its age. There are rim flakes and flea bites along the edge and one fine hairline crack measuring approximately 3½ inches. The enamel painting remains vivid and well-preserved, with only minor wear consistent with age and use. Structurally solid and displays beautifully.
A refined and historically significant Chinese export bowl that beautifully illustrates the fusion of Eastern porcelain artistry and Western classical themes—an excellent addition for collectors of 18th century export porcelain or Qianlong famille rose wares.
