About the Item
This is a good Chinese Export Sparrow Beak Jug or Pitcher, all hand painted in the Famille Rose palette and dating to the 18th century, Qing dynasty, Qianlong period, 1736-1795. We date this piece to circa 1775.
The Jug or pitcher is well potted, with a lovely rounded shape to the body which tapers into the neck all on a low foot with a shaped loop handle having a thumb rest. The jug has the distinctive narrow pointed spout in the form of the beak of a bird, from which it derives its name. The glaze is fairly thick with an off- white colour.
This jug would have been used for pouring cream or milk
It is well hand decorated with a floral sprig arrangement with a central front floral sprig arrangement within a bordered cartouche, all in different hand coloured polychrome enamels of pink, green, aubergine and burnt orange, based on the famille rose palette. The rim of the Sparrow-beak jug has a border pattern below the rim in some of the same colours.
This jug would have been made in China for the European export market, the style of decoration being typical of that found on many English and other European manufacturers around this time such as Worcester, Coalport, Spode etc.
The jug is unmarked to the base.
