About the Item

Medium size ginger jar or large tea caddy features a detailed decor of a bird sitting on a flowering branch, done in Totai Shippo technique in dark red and green colors. The shoulder of the jar is accented with cloisonne band with abstract geometric decor in red and brown colors, complementing the organic, earthy palette of the piece. Totai Shippo, the Japanese Meiji (1867-1912) period porcelain decoration, is best described as a rare type of cloisonne enamel on porcelain that gives the piece an appearance of bark on a tree. The jar is equipped with the white porcelain glazed inner lid, decorated with gold accents, and the cover, decorated with a floral motif on the brown tree bark background. The jar is in good antique condition with minimal, age-appropriate signs of use on the inner rim that are not detracting from the beauty and craftsmanship of the piece, and are not noticeable when the cover is closed. The jar is marked with remnants of old paper sticker, possibly from store in Japan. The elegant, sculptural form, high quality craftsmanship, and traditional, highly detailed decoration will make the ginger jar a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Mid Century Modern, Transitional, Modern Country, Glam, Hollywood Regency, Collected, or Contemporary.

Rubboli Lustre Majolica Vase with Mythical Beasts Decor
By Rubboli
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Sculptural, large ceramic Neo-Renaissance Rubboli vase is finished in cobalt, red and gold lustre. Hand-painted decor follows the classical shape of the piece, with abstract pattern accentuated the base and the top of the vase, and traditional designs of mythical beasts surrounding central medallion motifs. The vase is a stunning, museum quality example of the revival of the magnificent Italian Renaissance decoration of the 16th century. Late 19th century collecting craze for Renaissance majolica, especially lusterware, prompted the Italian potters to hunt for the secret formulas that were lost four hundred years earlier. Studios owned by such ceramicists as Cantagalli, Molaroni, Rubboli, Santarella, and others attempted to duplicate antique lusterware pieces for the general public. Each studio developed their own closely guarded formulation. In 1870s Paolo Rubboli...
