A whimsical pair of late Qing Dynasty (1636-1912) Chinese pottery Sancai green glazed joss stick incense holders. circa 1890 Born in China around the turn of the late 19th / early 20th century, exceptionally executed small sculptural form, modeled as a foo dog / guardian lion, with bulging eyes, mouth ajar, standing on integral stepped plinth base. Finely detailed throughout, the rich green glaze having an exceptional warmth, depth, and lustrous sheen. Originally intended as an altar incense burner / censer, today this pair would look stunning on a shelf as bookends or on your table, desk or fireplace mantle as a fanciful figural sculpture or small protection statue. They would also make a wonderful gift! Imperial Lions: Chinese or Imperial guardian lions, also known as lion dogs or foo dogs in English, are a traditional Chinese architectural ornament. Typically made of stone, they are also known as stone lions or shishi. The concept, which originated and became popular in Chinese Buddhism, features a pair of highly stylized lions, often one male with a ball and one female with a cub, which were thought to protect the building from harmful spiritual influences. Used in imperial Chinese palaces and tombs, the lions subsequently spread to other parts of Asia including Japan (see komainu), Korea, Tibet, Thailand, Burma, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Cambodia, Laos, and Singapore and became an important part of Chinese ceramics / pottery and folk lore. Retaining original antique character and charm throughout, including a large chip to the back corner of one base, small nicks and minor scattered loss to glazing, and significant buildup, all wear commensurate with age, use, and handling.
