These beautiful table lamps have been attributed to Joseph-Théodore Deck, one of the most important ceramicists of the 19th century. Deck was the director of a prestigious faience workshop which was based in France. He was well known for his high-quality ceramic wares, which were often designed in Islamic and Chinese styles.
The lamps are designed in a Persian manner. Each lamp is fitted with a gilt bronze (ormolu) light fixture which holds two bulbs. The lamps' bodies are crafted from faience (tin-glazed earthenware) and feature cylindrical necks and bulbous lower bodies. Iznik & Kutahya are towns in Turkey with an illustrious history of hundreds of years of fine pottery making, this type of pottery is characterized by it's fritware body often containing a high percentage of ground glass & fired at lower temperatures, a type of tin glazed earthenware, which was an attempt to imitate the high-fired glazes of Chinese porcelain.
This plate dates to the middle of the 1700s by around 1800 the production of such pottery has ceased. This plate is in good condition, no cracks or chips, expected small amounts of glaze loss to the edges, the makers mark is on the verso in the form of an under glaze flower head.
