About the Item

A Korean ceramic celadon vase with inlay design from Goryeo Dynasty (918 to 1392AD) circa 11th century. Crafted in celadon-glazed ceramic with an olive-green tone, the vase features a classic Meiping form with raised rounded shoulder tapering down to a slightly flared foot, and a short neck and mouth with an everted rim. Under a fine crackled glaze, the surface was decorated with white slip inlays that depicts weeping willows and tall upward spraying grasses. The circular design was set between the upper bands of two lines and a circle of small inlaid rosettes and the lower border of inlaid lotus petals. Above the shoulder and around the mouth, there are an additional circle of lotus petal, with alternate black and white inlays. The inlay work is spontaneous, charming in a rustic folk aesthetic, indicating that the vase was likely made for vernacular use in the earlier part of the Goryeo period before the inlay work became more refined. There are areas of mottled celadon glaze from the production. The foot shows exposed clay with kilt grits. Provenance: Dr. Robert H. Baer (1941-2024). A renowned archaeologist. As an authentic period piece, the vase shows age-appropriate wear and patina that is reflected in the detail pictures on the listing. Examining under the black light, there is an old restoration on a crack line along the side of the body. The restorer disguised the line as a stem of the grass to blend it in. Stable tight hairline has developed since and extended onto the shoulder.
