Pair of Chinese Blue and White Porcelain Tokkuri (Sake Bottles) Jingdezhen kilns, Early 17th century (Late Ming dynasty), made for the Japanese market. The porcelain is Kraak type of porcelain Height: approx. 20.5 cm each This pair of porcelain vessels, of double-gourd tokkuri (sake bottle) form, represents a distinctive example of Jingdezhen production for the Japanese market during the early 17th century. Executed in underglaze cobalt blue on a white porcelain body, the bottles exemplify the transitional style of late Ming ceramic production, with a strong emphasis on narrative figuration and dynamic surface decoration. The lower sections are composed of vertically paneled hexagonal bases, each bearing alternating reserves of figural scenes and landscape vignettes. The figural panels depict seated, possibly Daoist or Buddhist-inspired figures rendered with a degree of spontaneity and animation characteristic of Transitional-period wares. In contrast, the landscape scenes — including depictions of scholars in boats and mountainous settings — reflect literati themes that resonated with the Japanese aesthetic sensibility of the early Edo period. The upper globular sections are densely ornamented with a variety of auspicious emblems, including representations of Buddhist treasures (babao), ribbons, and floral motifs. The painterly handling of these motifs demonstrates both fluidity and confidence, revealing the practiced hand of a kiln painter accustomed to high-volume export wares, yet still attentive to detail and balance. These bottles were produced during a time of increased maritime trade and cultural exchange between China and Japan, at a moment when Jingdezhen kilns were actively supplying the Japanese market with bespoke ceramic forms. The use of the tokkuri form — typically associated with Japanese dining and ceremonial culture — underscores the intentional adaptation of Chinese production to foreign demand. Such pieces were not merely utilitarian but also held aesthetic and symbolic value within Japanese domestic and ritual contexts. Both vessels exhibit minor kiln-related imperfections and expected wear, including fritting to the glaze at rims and edges, consistent with early 17th-century manufacture. They are preserved with a custom-made wooden storage box and fitted padding, indicative of the care afforded to such objects in private collections. This pair constitutes a rare and well-preserved example of Sino-Japanese ceramic exchange in the early modern period, offering insight into both the adaptability of Jingdezhen kilns and the evolving tastes of Japanese consumers in the pre-Arita era.
