About the Item

The lid of this petite trinket box is a shard of glazed porcelain, a remnant of the antique pottery destroyed during the Cultural Revolution of the 1960-70s. Likely dating to the late Qing-dynasty (1636–1911), the porcelain vase fragment is hand-painted in sheer enameled with a magpie perched on the branches of a pine tree. Known as the "bird of joy" in Chinese art, the magpie is thought to announce happy events and is a common motif on wedding gifts. The shard is set into bands of repoussé silver alloy to become a small, lidded box, the perfect place for stowing jewelry or precious keepsakes.
