About the Item
A very nicely decorated small dish, dating to ca 1500, Hongzhi or Zhengde period.
The small saucer dish is decorated with a raised moulded goldfish coloured in orange-red enamel and surrounded by water plants in cobalt blue.
This type seemed to be very popular not only with people in Indonesia and the Philippines but also with the local market in China.
Fish, yu in Chinese, is one of the most common and auspicious designs on Chinese ceramics. It has the same sound as yu, meaning surplus, or
prosperity. The prototype of the design of a single fish among tape-grass is likely a common design on Song and Yuan dynasty wares. On pieces from
the early Ming blue-and-white wares, the fish is seen swimming in a pool surrounded by a variety of water plants, such as lotuses, arrowheads and
tape-grass. Later the plants become less detailed and less varied, and in fact reduced to solely tape-grass. Typical for this development is this
favourite Ming dish for the Chinese and South East Asian markets presented here.
The 'modern' version of the design of a single fish surrounded by water plants painted in cobalt blue is today still available in every Chinese
supermarket around the world; however, the tape-grass has now been reduced to three short formless festoons, with all other elements repressed.
The small dish with a single fish might well be an example of the devolution of a design into mass production.
