Celadon Dragon Trick Cup on Stand, Qianlong Emperor

About the Item

This Qianlong Emperor style porcelain cup on stand has a light green, jade-like Celadon glaze. In the center of the cup a laughing dragon's head emerges, and there are incised clouds and waves and pearls around the outside of the cup, with traces of gilt decoration around the rim. The stand has raised decorations of two dragons, with four claws on each foot, flying among clouds on the saucer's surface, and with stylized waves and clouds on the base. The rim of the saucer also has traces of gilding along its rim. This cup on stand tricks the drinker while tea is being poured into it. The tea flows through a hole in the cup, hidden by the dragon's neck, and flows into holes in the top of the stand. When the stand's hollow interior is full, the liquid begins to flow over the sides of the saucer like rain off a roof, as the dragon laughs. The cup is unmarked, but the stand has the archaic seal marks of the Qianlong Emperor in underglaze high relief in four characters which read "Qianlong [emperor] period make." This set was made after the reign of Qianlong in homage to the cleverness and artistry of the period as told by excluding the two-character "Great Qing" dynasty name in the seal marks. The cup and stand were made toward the end of the Qing dynasty, during the time of the last emperors and the emergence of the Republic of China. Besides representing the emperor, the dragon is revered as the bringer of rain and governor of flowing waters. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. There is a glaze ding on the surface of the saucer, and it has a natural wood-fired kiln dark spot on the side of the cup. Both are seen in the photos.
