China - 19th century
Li Tieguai is an important figure in Chinese folklore and Taoist mythology. He is considered one of the eight immortals of the Taoist pantheon. According to legend, Li Tieguai was a doctor who achieved immortality through his healing powers.
The town of Shiwan is known for the manufacture of artistic and everyday Shiwan ceramics.
In ancient times, the town of Shiwan in the city of Foshan was an important manufacturing center. The artistic ceramics of Shiwan include five main genres: statuettes of figures, statuettes of animals, vessels, small sculptures and finials.
Shiwan ceramics date back to the Tang (from 618 to 907) and Song (from 960 to 1279) dynasties and flourished in the Ming (from 1368 to 1644) and Qing (from 1644 to 1911) periods.
In addition to ceramics in common use, the production included decorative objects, statuettes of Buddhas and Immortals, Material for scholars, figures, flowers, birds, insects and fish. These products were sold for the domestic market, but also in those of Southeast Asia, Europe and America.
