Japan a tall handmade Folk Art pottery vase from Japan's early 20th century Sumida ware depicting three rambunctious children playing ball. Signed Ryosai in a white glazed gourd shaped lower section Beautifully handmade, hand-painted and hand flambé glazed with a pinched style mouth and with glorious images of the children Dimensions: 14.5 inches tall Scarce design, few exist today in this tall scale and particularly in this very fine condition. Handmade, hand-painted and hand glazed in brilliant colors white, red, green, blue and black History of Sumida Pottery Sumida pottery was created specifically for export between the late 1800s and the 1920s. It was still produced until World War II and briefly after the war. This colorful ware is usually heavy and covered with figures in relief. Everyday objects such as tea pots, vases, and mugs were produced. This distinct type of wares got its name from the Sumida river running near the Asakusa pottery district near Tokyo. The style of applied figures on a surface with flowing glaze was invented about 1890 by the Seto potter Ryosai I, They are often embellished with glazed plaques with hand written signatures or general good luck symbols. Sumida pottery can be found in all kinds of shapes imaginable, is heavy, sculpted and usually has applied three-dimensional figures. The most common characteristics are items whose upper half (or less) is partially glazed with a flambé glaze or glazed with two or more colors in a splashed application. Often, the glaze has run, creating curtains or droplets. Some pieces are entirely glazed while others are bisque. This is a very good Chinese Export, (Canton) large porcelain plate or dish, all hand painted with a light green celadon glaze, which we date to the early 19th century, circa 1820, of the Qing dynasty. A feature of this plate is its size, having a large dinner plate diameter of nearly 10 inches, as the majority of plates of this type have a much smaller diameter . The plate has a light green, Celadon ground glaze with beautifully hand painted decoration, in over-glaze poly-chrome enamels of the Famille-Rose palette, featuring a bird, butterflies, fruits and flowers. The rim is hand painted in a café-au-lait light brown finish. There is an under-glaze, cobalt blue square seal mark, hand painted to the base.
