Chinese Blue and White Klapmuts Bowl Made in Reign of Chongzhen Emperor

Why We Love It: The blue and white design is hypnotic. We are pleased to offer this 17th-century blue and white Chinese Klapmuts bowl made circa 1640. It is beautifully hand-painted in the Kraak style. Our bowl has traditional Klapmuts decoration: the central panel is painted with cloud and ruyi patterns in gray-blue cobalt. The cavetto of four oblong panels are alternately filled with floral sprays and auspicious symbols which convey a wish for happiness and good luck. Above the two decorative panels, an auspicious monster face connects the cartouche to the rim. This composition is typical of Klapmuts bowls made in Jingdezhen workshops during the first half of the 17th century. Japanese connoisseurs enjoyed the design so much that they wittingly named it "biting moon" pattern. The underside of the bowl is painted with a simpler decoration in cobalt blue, showing a flower or geometric form inside an oval. The underside is glazed and shows chatter marks. The form of this bowl is typical of Chinese Kraak, Klapmuts porcelain bowls. The top rim of the bowl has a traditional foliated edge with a wide rim. The base has a traditional short footrim. The potting of the bowl is thin and delicate. The glaze is smooth, except on the bottom. The shape of this bowl is somewhere between a deep dish and a shallow bowl (it is 2.5" deep x 8.25" diameter). It was made for export to the Dutch market. Kraak decoration typically consists of a central medallion, with a rim divided into sections, each with their own decorative content. The underside of the bowl would also be decorated with panels. This type of decoration is often found on Chinese export wares of this period. Kraak porcelain was made in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and is one of the earliest blue and white porcelain styles made for the European market. It was first brought to Europe by the Portuguese. In the seventeenth century, Europe soups and stews were staples of the European diet, and there was strong demand for shallow bowls with rims. The name "Kraak" is a Dutch transcription of the Portuguese word 'Carraca', or 'Carrack' in English, a type of ship the Portuguese used at the time. The term 'Kraak' appears to have been first used in the seventeenth century by the Dutch, and it is now the accepted name for this type of Chinese porcelain.
