About the Item
A rare and unusual Chinese Yixing sancai glazed teapot and cover mounted with a rat finial acquired as dating from the Kangxi reign 1662 – 1722. The lightly hand-crafted red clay teapot stands on a flat oval shaped foot, the oval bulbous body having been created as two halves. The teapot has a loop handle applied to one side and a raised pouring spout to the opposite side with a narrow raised upper rim with a domed fitted cover with a rat feasting on fallen fruit forming the finial. The body of the teapot is decorated in low relief with a framed panel containing figures to one side and with Chinese verse and seal mark on an unfolded scroll to the opposite side. Further decorative panels are applied around the handle and spout. A carved petal design is applied around the shoulder of the teapot with a carved pattern around the lower body and with the petal patterning repeated around the cover. The teapot is hand painted in tones of green, blue and yellow on a cream glazed ground and the teapot is not marked.
Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market.
In good condition with wear associated with age and use. With a few small glaze chips around the tip of the spout and upper edge of the teapot and to the underside of the cover.
