About the Item
This sculptural ceramic object is a Chinese oil lamp from the late Ming dynasty, originally used in altar displays for Buddhist ceremonies and ritual offerings. The vessel is a variation of the sacred oil lamp of Buddhist tradition, also known as a diya or butter lamp. Set alight to focus the mind and banish darkness, the sacred lamp represents the guiding light of the Buddha's wisdom on the path to enlightenment.
Sculpted in a manner unique to Chinese folk ceramics, this earthenware lamp is cloaked in an allover green glaze with streaking color and subtle iridescence. The round oil dish is finished with a ruffled edge and the pillar stem is shaped to resemble a small temple shrine, a hollowed alcove for a petite bodhisattva figure in prayer.
