About the Item
This earthenware bowl from the late Ming dynasty (1368-1644) is cloaked inside and out in an ashen celadon glaze, fired with cool grey color and fine crazing. Once used daily for food and drink, the bowl is potted with a footed base and steep, rounded sides that indicate a 16th-century dating.
The exterior is loosely etched with vertical lines in a pattern of lotus petals, a motif for purity, beauty and summertime. The cool celadon glaze sheets and drips down the sides with subtle tonal variation, marked with firing imperfections and faded wear from years of use.
