About the Item

This Ming-dynasty (1368-1644) plate is attributed to the kilns of Yunnan province, painted in cobalt underglaze with a chrysanthemum blossom and sweeping brushstrokes. Dated to the 15th/16th century, the earthenware dish is potted with thick walls and a shallow form that levels at the rim. The bowl is finished with a green celadon glaze of darker tone, marked with subtle crazing and firing imperfections. The plate has a wabi-sabi beauty that reveals the hand of its maker, from the kiln support marks that interrupt the glaze to the depth of color that indicates where each brushstroke began.
