About the Item

This Ming-dynasty (1368-1644) storage jar is attributed to the kilns of Yunnan province, loosely decorated with cobalt underglaze in a manner typical of the region. Dated to the 15th/16th century, the small jar is potted with a rounded base, high shoulders and a short, constrained neck, lightly textured with ridges left by the potter's hands. The shoulders are painted with dark blue cobalt pigments to an abstract floral design of sweeping brushstrokes and "horse eye" spirals. A thin glaze of celadon tone finishes the design, flecked with firing imperfections and softly worn with time.
