About the Item

This Ming-dynasty (1368-1644) bowl is attributed to the kilns of Yunnan province, painted in dark cobalt underglaze with floral motifs and sweeping brushstrokes. Dated to the 15th/16th century, the small footed bowl was once used daily for food and drink, shaped with rounded sides and a deep interior perfect for a serving of rice. The bowl is finished with an ashen glaze of celadon tone, worn by time for a soft texture and faded imperfections. The little dish has a wabi-sabi beauty that reveals the hand of its maker, from the kiln support marks that interrupt the glaze to the depth of color that indicates where each brushstroke began. Minor chips and one hairline crack to rim.
