About the Item

This Ming-dynasty (1368-1644) storage jar is attributed to the kilns of Yunnan province, loosely decorated with iron underglaze in a manner typical of the region. Dated to the 15th/16th century, the small jar is sweetly potted to a round, globular form with short footed base and a flattened rim. The sides are painted with dark brown iron pigments to an abstract design of "horse eye" spirals, a motif thought to represent thunderclouds or shells. A translucent glaze finishes the design, flecked with firing imperfections and softly worn with time. Blistering to glaze on one side.
