About the Item

With its balanced silhouette and subdued color palette, this lotus offering vase from the early Ming dynasty (1368-1644) resonates calm and sophistication. Sculpted centuries ago in Yunnan province, the earthenware jar was originally an offering vessel, or spirit jar, originally filled with ritual offerings such as coins, shells, flowers and grains. As though emerging from a lotus blossom, the small jar is decorated along the sides with wide lotus petals, applied in low relief and surrounded by freeform, etched patterns. Left unglazed, the black clay form has developed an incredible, rich surface texture, tinged with red-orange color from years of contact with iron-rich soil.
