About the Item

A Chinese Qing Blue Copper Red Decorated Porcelain Baluster Vase with Carved Foo Dog and Floral Decoration This porcelain baluster vase, rising gracefully from a narrow circular foot to a broad, flaring mouth, presents a richly executed combination of sculptural and painted ornament typical of Qing decorative craftsmanship. The central focus of the vessel is a prominently carved foo dog modeled in high relief, depicted in lively motion with its head turned slightly and its body defined by swirling lines that articulate the mane, tail, and fur. The creature appears in crisp white against a densely decorated Blue Copper Red floral ground, creating a striking visual contrast that emphasizes the three-dimensionality of the relief. The surrounding floral field consists of scrolling stems, layered petals, and lotus pods rendered in alternating cobalt blue and copper red, forming an intricate tapestry that envelops the main body. Below this register, the lower section features a ring of elongated copper-red vertical panels bordered by narrow blue lines, while the shoulder carries a band of scrolling blue motifs that serve as a transitional element between the body and neck. The flared neck is adorned with a refined plum-blossom design laid over a deep blue ground. Clusters of white blossoms, each accented with soft pink centers, emerge from gracefully branching limbs that wrap around the neck’s curved form. The painterly handling of the blossoms, combined with the dark blue background, produces a balanced composition reminiscent of Qing tastes for seasonal floral themes. Fine geometric bands in blue frame the rim and the foot, creating a unified decorative scheme. The vase demonstrates the Qing potteries’ skill in merging sculptural relief with bold color contrasts. The interplay between the raised foo dog and the vivid Blue Copper Red palette places this vessel firmly within the expressive tradition of late Qing porcelain artistry.
