About the Item
A stunning and very rare antique Chinese celadon glazed porcelain figure of a water buffalo dating from the 18th or early 19th century. The figure is exceptionally hand crafted and originated from a major museum collection. Standing raised on four legs The buffalo glances slightly sideways with its head lowered. The buffalo has two large horns, recessed eyes and finely detailed facial features. It has a short tail resting on its hind quarter and well detailed hoofs. The figure is decorated in pale green celadon glaze although unglazed under the hoofs. There is a four-character Chinese mark applied to the underside of the hoofs, one to each of the four feet.
Provenance: Acquired from a major museum collection due to accidental breakage to the legs. Acquired from the UK art market.
We have had two legs professionally reattached and restored by a leading museum accredited restorer. There are a number of firing cracks and natural age crazing to the glazed finish. These do not detract and this is an exceptionally rare and fine example.

- Condition:Repaired: Invisible professional restoration to clean breaks to two legs. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor structural damages. The item has a series of fine kiln firing cracks to glazed finish with light crazing.
