About the Item

A Chinese Sang de Boeuf Glaze Bowl, 19th Century Description: Sang de boeuf, meaning "ox blood" in French, is a distinctive deep red ceramic glaze that originated in China during the Kangxi Emperor's reign (1662–1722). It is also known as oxblood or flambé glaze. This glaze relies on copper oxide as a coloring agent and is achieved by firing the object in a reducing atmosphere (oxygen-depleted kiln). The copper is starved of oxygen during firing and re-oxidized during cooling, resulting in the characteristic red color. The glaze often exhibits variations in color and opacity, sometimes appearing streaked or with blue bleeds. It can also give the impression of a transparent surface layer with fine bubbles over the underlying color. Sang de boeuf glazes were highly prized, especially in the 19th century, and European potters were unable to replicate the technique until the early 20th century. Provenance: Private Australian Collection. Dimensions: Height: 13cm. Diameter: 27cm.
