About the Item

Chinese Song Dynasty Cizhou Black and Brown Glazed Stoneware Grain Jar Extremely rare, high quality and historically significant stoneware grain jar from the Song Dynasty, 12th Century. This Cizhou large stoneware jar with rat application is recognized as a very important piece of Chinese pottery. The body is hard fired in grayish white stoneware with a characteristic brilliant dark brown glaze with some fine grazing. Infrequent decoration of molded rodents symbolizes good luck and plenty. If the rat motif is part of a rare and particularly well executed decorative design, the importance increases significantly. The existence of such a piece with unique design and complex artistry is consistent with known Cizhou traditions. The large in scale jar is very special as it is not commonly found. The condition is good. A fine superficial crack in the glaze on top of the jar (pic). The concave bottom has a drilled hole for conversion to a table lamp. A second hole is drilled on the bottom side. Wear commensurate with age and use. Provenance on request. Measurements: H 14" x Diameter 12" 12 lbs.
