About the Item
A fine Tang dynasty (618 to 906 AD) brown glazed jar with applied lug handles, circa late 9th or early 10th century, China.
The jar of somewhat stout proportions, but sill elegantly shaped, with a flat foot and tapered waist rising to broad, almost voluptuous shoulders with a pair of loop handles and an everted mouth.
The interior and exterior covered in a rich deep brown glaze with fine speckling throughout, reminiscent of a tea dust glaze. The glaze stopping just before the foot, revealing the fine, grayish white body.
For a very similar, slightly larger example, see lot 8030 from the Christie's Sale 11220, The Collection of Robert Hatfield Ellsworth Volume VII.
