About the Item
A finely painted Chinese Dayazhai style turquoise glazed double lozenge shaped porcelain jardiniere and underplate with grisaille and gilt decoration, mid-20th century, China.
The tall porcelain jardiniere of double lozenge (fangsheng) form, an auspicious symbol, and one of the Babao, or Eight Treasures. The double lozenge symbol provides wishes for a happy marriage. The symbol is also said to ward off evil.
The jardiniere is decorated in the Dayazhai style, with grisaille and white enamels on a bright turquoise ground. The decoration bold and tight, featuring a gilt-painted writhing dragon to either side. The sinuous dragon surrounded by thick sprays of blossoming white enameled chrysanthemum and hibiscus flowers with grisaille enameled foliage. The everted rim with plum blossoms in white enamel between a grisaille leiwen border.
The jardiniere crafted with a large drain hole, and sits upon a porcelain saucer of the same shape and decorated in the same manner as the jardiniere.
Both the jardiniere and the saucer with a four character Yong Qing Chang Chun mark in iron red to the underside.
